What is Weather Adjusted Energy Data?

Weather adjusted energy data establishes a baseline of energy used by your business for its operational requirements. Weather adjusted data factors out the energy used by your business on heating or cooling. It’s also known as “weather normalisation” or “weather correction”.

The following is a Case Study demonstrating the insights that ALPHA. Lite can offer its subscribers. This example uses data from January 2019 at a site in Milton Keynes, which had an average temperature of 5 degrees C. To evaluate its consumption, the data is compared with another site operated by the same client under similar conditions.

January 2019 – Milton Keynes Site. Average temperature 5 degrees C.

Table 1 shows a client using 38% of their overall consumption on heating energy alone, at 40,010 kWh. In Milton Keynes, with an average temperature of 5 degrees C in January 2019, this client consumed a total of 105,088 kWh. After correcting the data to factor out heating energy, the weather adjusted baseline consumption was 65,079 kWh.

Figure 1 and Figure 2 demonstrate the level of insight which ALPHA. Lite provides, showing the client’s baseline consumption at a daily average of 2,099 kWh.

When this data is compared to a similar site operated by the same client in Liverpool (Table 2), with the same outdoor temperature, ALPHA. Lite revealed 24.6% less efficiency in Milton Keynes’ baseline consumption. The data encourages the client to take practical, energy-efficiency measures to reduce their baseline consumption.

Table 2 shows a similar site which uses 13.4% of their total energy on heating, despite having similar weather conditions. Energy efficiency measures have proven to be successful at this site, as the client was able to operate their site using 23% less overall consumption than Milton Keynes.

This client could implement similar energy efficiency measures from their Liverpool site to reduce their consumption in Milton Keynes, resulting in improved sustainability and overall cost-effectiveness across more of their sites.
